"Wicked Witch of the West" - the newest addition to the exciting series based on the classic 1939 motion picture masterpiece The Wizard of Oz

Faithfully based on the character immortalized by Margaret Hamilton in the 1939 film, Oz's fearsome villain has been brought to life by R. JOHN WRIGHT DOLLS for the first time in the medium of molded felt.

Standing 17" tall, the Wicked Witch is fully jointed at shoulders, hips and neck with the R. John Wright ball & socket jointing system.
She has a realistic molded felt torso and limbs and her amazing felt hands have individually sewn fingers with applied fingernails!
The molded felt character face has been finely modeled in a true likeness with hand painted features and shaded green complexion. The Wicked Witch's wig is made of the finest custom-dyed mohair and styled exactly as it was in the film.

Extensively researched for the utmost in authenticity, the Wicked Witch of the West is outfitted in a tailored Victorian-style dress of black cotton fabric with a matching laced waistcoat and purse. A dramatic flowing black cape fastens at her throat. Period undergarments, dark stockings, hand-cobbled black pumps and a replica hat with attached silk veil complete her trademark ensemble. This is the most accurate representation of this iconic film character ever created. In one hand, the Wicked Witch carries a detailed custom-made miniature of the broom as seen in the film.

The Wicked Witch of the West will be produced in an extremely small edition of just 250 pieces worldwide.

Thornton Burgess (1874-1965) was a conservationist and author of children's stories featuring the wildlife of his native state. He was born in Sandwich, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. While growing up he roamed the woods, fields and salt marshes of Cape Cod, where he came to know the birds, animals and plant life well. Later, as a grown man, he told stories about animals and nature to his young son. In 1910, these stories formed the basis for his first book, Old Mother West Wind. Following its success, he wrote a syndicated daily newspaper strip, Bedtime Stories (illustrated by Harrison Cady), which ran uninterupted from 1912 to 1960. Burgess' output also comprises over 170 books, among them The Adventures of Peter Cottontail which was first published in 1914. Decades later, he worked on an Easter television special Here Comes Peter Cottontail which featured the familiar song shown above.

Today, the Thornton W. Burgess Society continues to carry out the philosophies he instilled in his children's stories. The Society operates the Green Briar Nature Center and Thornton W. Burgess Museum in Sandwich, Massachusetts, and publishes periodic newsletters and bulletins to inspire reverence for wildlife and concern for the natural environment.

Peter Cottontail is constructed of the finest mohair plush and wool felt. He is fully jointed and stands approximately 15" tall. His beautiful, sculptural face and ears have detailed coloration and he features felt-backed glass eyes, a molded felt nose, and inserted whiskers.

Peter Cottontail comes holding a springtime bouquet of detailed felt violets and pussywillows made entirely of felt and mohair plush. He also carries a papier mache Easter egg gaily wrapped in paper with silk ribbons. For effortless display, Peter Cottontail features a built-in removable metal stand.

Peter Cottontail is produced at the R. John Wright workshop in Bennington, Vermont in an edition limited to 200 pieces. Each will come enclosed in a deluxe RJW presentation box with the accompanying signed and numbered certificate of authenticity and the forms for owner registration.

Put away the traps and hide the cheese. Don’t run screaming or climb up on a kitchen chair—not that you would want to. One sight of R. John Wright’s very newest mouse creation, Little Tommy Tittlemouse, and the only place you’ll want to “trap” him is in your curio or what-not shelf.

With myriad bears, bunnies, squirrels, ducks, and even a monkey in the Wright collection, it seems only reasonable that mice have joined the parade. Today the artist’s mouse figures cover holidays and seasons, Mother Goose and Beatrix Potter.

The first mouse, The Mouse Tailor, appeared in 2001 as part of the Beatrix Potter series. “Several
of [Beatrix Potter’s] books feature mice characters,” explains John, “and we decided to produce The Mouse Tailor as an exclusive edition. We had never made a mouse before, and once we had worked out some of the design/production problems inherent in such a small piece, we saw the opportunity to develop other mouse characters.”

This first creation, seated atop a spool of salmon-pink thread and perusing a newspaper, is a delicately crafted piece in every detail, from his filament whiskers to his primly crossed ankles. He wears a remarkably animated expression for so small a work—peering over his spectacles with a look of scholarly inquiry. Such intricacy was the result of great experimentation and innovation.
“The main difference in making mice for us was the issue of size,” recalls John. “If a mouse becomes too large, it begins to resemble a rat! So it was important that the mice be no larger than four inches.”

This would, as John and his wife Susan feared, limit the artistic interpretation of the character. “At first it seemed like it would not be possible to keep the mice small and detailed if they were made of mohair plush,” says John. “Steiff produced small mohair mice, but we felt they were not detailed and realistic enough to evoke Beatrix Potter’s images.”

John momentarily considered making the mice in molded felt rather than mohair but felt they would be more appealing if made of plush. And so, to achieve the desired effect in plush, new design and production techniques were developed for the mice. According to John, mohair has a “spiky” quality to it if not treated to lie flat. “The direction of the lay of the fur was taken into consideration when sewing the parts together,” says John. “We had to develop new techniques for the fine mouse ears, and decisions had to be made concerning the paws and tail.”

Other Beatrix Potter mice have followed in The Mouse Tailor’s footsteps, including Johnny Town-Mouse, Hunca Munca, Tom Thumb, and Appley Dapply.

In 2003, the first in what became a series of holiday mice appeared: Nibbles, the original R. John Wright Christmas mouse who stands 3 inches tall, sports a dapper blue and grey scarf and clasps a delectable peppermint stick.

“The Christmas mouse Nibbles was made exclusively for the Toy Shoppe, who may have approached us with the idea of a mouse holding a sweet,” says John. “Initially, this was not planned as a series, but the response to Nibbles was so overwhelming that we quickly decided to make it an annual offering for the holiday season.

“The first prototype of Cocoa did not have a nightcap,” John continues. “Danny [Shapiro] at the Toy Shoppe asked if we could put something on the mouse to give more of an anthropomorphic effect, his reasoning being that the previous Christmas mice all had ‘human characteristics’ in the form of scarves, ribbons, etc. We made Cocoa a nightcap so he would be more compatible with the series. It was an immediate improvement!”

Danny of The Toy Shoppe (thetoyshoppe.com; 800-447-7995) remembers the exclusive premiere of Nibbles well: “Four exclusive mice later, we continue to be enchanted by John’s talent for bestowing such character in them … Our little Petit Four exhibits such emotion that you can actually ‘feel’ his longing for that delicious treat! It’s through this gift that John strikes such an emotional chord with all collectors.”

Lest the fans of autumn holidays think that Halloween has been slighted — think again! Trick or Treat, the first of the Halloween mice, appeared in 2008 and is followed this year by Black Magic. Each of these limited-edition pieces have been created exclusively for FairyTales Inc. in Lombard, Ill. (fairy-tales-inc.com; 800-495-6973). “We had specialized in miniatures for many years with many of our collectors focusing on mice [like those by] Wee Forest Folk,” says James Pokorn of FairyTales. “Since Halloween is one of our strongest holidays, it was a logical choice to pursue Trick or Treat for our shop. Our collectors have embraced the mice created by John and Susan. Each is truly a piece of art with its own character and personality.”

“Black Magic will have sort of a ‘sorcerer’ motif to his costuming,” says John, “with coloring being primarily black and purple. The prototype has not yet been finalized, but the Halloween series will feature other small accessories not limited to sweets. And yes, there are ideas on the drawing board for further mice in the Halloween collection.”

The newest mice of the R. John Wright line derive from some of the oldest children’s stories. “The latest mouse collection is the new Mother Goose series. The first piece in that collection was Daffy Down Dilly based on the nursery rhyme of the same name. … The second piece in that series is Little Tommy Tittlemouse from the classic Mother Goose rhyme.”

Little Tommy Tittlemouse, who finds himself on the cover of this issue, stands just 3 inches tall. Wearing a natural straw hat and complete with fishing pole and felt fish, he is limited to just 150 pieces and available through the RJW company store.

Fans of the Mother Goose mice collection can expect more mice to come, including Little Maid, Pretty Maid, and Wee Willie Winkie.

And for those fashion-conscious collectors interested in the sartorially minded mouse, don’t forget Lady Mouse and Gentleman Mouse, who model the latest fashionable rodent attire of the 18th century. And the simple change of seasons is celebrated with Annamarie and Fritz, the Winter Mice.

Although there are no plans in the making for perhaps a Fourth of July or Thanksgiving mouse, John readily admits, “It could be a fun direction to go!”

The bear wears delicate Christmas roses made of felt and plush, along with branches of fir tree also carefully crafted from felt.

Two tiny golden bells on a gilded cord hang from her neck.

She is five-way jointed, has a hand-stitched golden nose and claws, and is truly a one-of-a-kind Steiff creation. This bear is a unique addition to your year-round collection and a special piece to display during the holidays.

Here is the first studio photo of the "Canadian" from the popular Palmer Cox Brownie Collection!

The Canadian is true to the original Palmer Cox illustrations and ready for the upcoming winter months outfitted in a wonderful toboggan outfit made completely of wool felt.

This whimsical character made his appearance in Cox's fourth Brownie book published in 1894 titled "The Brownies Around the World."

Based on the original Palmer Cox illustrations, the Brownie Canadian from R. John Wright Dolls is made of the finest all-wool felt and jointed at the neck and shoulders. He has a molded felt character face, hand painted features, a mohair wig, and incredibly tiny sculptural hands. Measuring 8 1/2" tall (without his hat), the Canadian has heavy wire inside his legs to enable him to be self-standing.

The Brownie Canadian is outfitted in a colorful outfit consisting of an all-felt greatcoat with felt covered buttons and sash, detailed mukluk boots, and a matching tassled cap. No detail has been spared to bring this amusing Palmer Cox character vividly to life.

Dancing into the hearts of R John Wright Collectors are The Lullaby League......

We are pleased to present the first piece in an exciting series based on the characters from the classic MGM motion picture.....

In the film¹s first full-color scenes in the Land of Oz, the diminutive "Munchkin" residents were played by a group of 124 adult midget performers.

The Munchkins were dressed in fantastical outfits designed by renowned Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer costume designer, Adrian. Under his direction, MGM¹s wardrobe department created over one hundred costumes for the Munchkin sequence alone.

Among these were the unique Art Deco-inspired ballet outfits of three Munchkin ladies who represented the "Lullaby League."

This charming trio danced together en pointe while singing their song to welcome Dorothy to Munchkinland.

The Lullaby League dancers from R. John Wright Dolls are faithfully based on the original movie images. Standing three different heights, just as in the film, they measure: 11 1/2; 10; and 8 1/2 inches respectively.

They are fully jointed and made entirely of custom-made all-wool felt with delicate hand painted features. Each has a wig of the finest imported mohair.

The dolls are dressed in miniature duplicates of the trademark Lullaby League costumes made of silk and custom-dyed and pleated Italian cotton organdy and tulle. On their feet, they wear authentic satin ballet slippers with silk ribbons and suede soles and each holds a tiny replica of the wood and parchment scrolls featured in the film.

Meticulously researched for detail and accuracy, this is the most authentic representation of these beloved characters ever created.

Produced at the R. John Wright workshop in Bennington, Vermont, each of the three Lullaby League dolls will come enclosed in a deluxe "Wizard of Oz" presentation box. Included will be the accompanying signed and numbered certificate of authenticity, and informational product booklet, and the forms for owner registration.

The event is to take place on Sunday 5th September 2010 starting at 11am.

This is an open event and everyone is welcome, Charlie and Will will be in attendance on the day to talk to collectors and to Sign Charlie Bear bags.

There is also a very special bear called Scribbles who is a Plumo bear only be available to purchase on the day. Scribbles comes with a certificate around his neck that Charlie will personalise and sign, he retails for £39.99.

**Thornton Burgess (1874-1965) was a conservationist and author of children's stories featuring the wildlife of his native state. He was born in Sandwich, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. While growing up he roamed the woods, fields and salt marshes of Cape Cod, where he came to know the birds, animals and plant life well. Later, as a grown man, he told stories about animals and nature to his young son. In 1910, these stories formed the basis for his first book, Old Mother West Wind. Following its success, he wrote a syndicated daily newspaper strip, Bedtime Stories (illustrated by Harrison Cady), which ran uninterupted from 1912 to 1960. Burgess' output also comprises over 170 books, among them The Adventures of Peter Cottontail which was first published in 1914. Decades later, he worked on an Easter television special Here Comes Peter Cottontail.

Today, the Thornton W. Burgess Society continues to carry out the philosophies he instilled in his children's stories. The Society operates the Green Briar Nature Center and Thornton W. Burgess Museum in Sandwich, Massachusetts, and publishes periodic newsletters and bulletins to inspire reverence for wildlife and concern for the natural environment.

Measuring a diminutive 3" tall, Little Tommy Tittlemouse is made of the finest mohair plush and jointed at the neck and shoulders, Little Tommy features realistic coloring, hand embroidered features, glass pupil eyes, inset whiskers, resin hands and feet, and a leather tail.

Based on the original English nursery rhyme of the same name, Little Tommy Tittlemouse is outfitted in a period costume consisting of cotton trousers of custom-printed tattersall fabric, a cotton jacket with a silk tie, and a boater hat made of fine woven natural straw braid with tiny grosgrain hatband.

In one hand he proudly holds his reed fishing pole w/cork bobber and the catch of the day - a plump felt fish!

Billy Bones Black ultra suede dragon with neon yellow skeleton details, yellow suede wings, orange feather hair with a sheer orange neck bow. Fully jointed.

Pumpkin Patch, Green ultra suede feet, head and hands, orange wool felt bodysuit with a black pumpkin face on his tummy, black suede spots, orange feather hair and darker green suede wings. Fully jointed.

The Irishman - the latest addition to the acclaimed PALMER COX BROWNIE COLLECTION.

This whimsical character made his appearance in Cox's first Brownie book published in 1887 titled "The Brownies, Their Book."

Based on the original Palmer Cox illustrations, the Brownie Irishman from R. John Wright Dolls is made of the finest all-wool felt and jointed at the neck and shoulders. He has a molded felt character face, hand painted features, a mohair wig, and incredibly tiny sculptural hands. Measuring 8 1/2" tall (without his hat), the Irishman has heavy wire inside his legs to enable him to be self-standing.

The Brownie Irishman hails from the Emerald Isle outfitted in a tailored felt swallow-tail jacket, tattersall shirt, knee-length felt breeches with working pockets, a tall felt hat, and hand cobbled leather slippers. Included is a handcarved 'shillelagh' walking stick. No detail has been spared to bring this delightful Palmer Cox character vividly to life.

The Brownie Irishman will be produced in a limited edition of just 250 pieces worldwide. He will come inside a deluxe R. John Wright presentation box with a signed and numbered Certificate of Authenticity and the forms for owner registration.

We are now open at Gloucester Quays Designer Outlet Centre

It’s has been a very busy time in the last six months planning the move to Gloucester Quays.

Apple Pie House is now open in the new Antique Centre on the second floor and it is fantastic.

So now there are several reasons to visit Apple Pie House, to see Graeme and all the bears and dolls and then there is the Designer outlet centre just next doort. With great names as Calvin Kline, Le Creuset, Austin Reed, Gap, Marks and Spenser Outlet and Next Clearence plus many more.
